The American Shorthair Domestic Cat is a small cat with genes that take it back thousands of years to Northern Africa and the Middle East. Here in the U.S. the breed is better known as a "street cat", a "tabby" or an "alley cat".
This cat is well set up by Mom Nature to survive with the fangs and claws and magnificent senses for hunting but it has something else to help it survive during lean times - the belly bag.
Down low between the lower belly and the groin cats have loose skin that doesn't show much during warm weather when they eat well. But it's there.
Winter is coming? The loose skin distends to form the "belly bag" and longer fur grows upon it, even on house cats. Cats use the belly bag to store fat to help them survive when they're not eating well during a winter.
The more I learn about cats the more amazed I am.
