I have spent three Thanksgivings away from home as a Marine but the service always got some hot turkey to you. Stateside, the people working the mess hall went nuts to feed the troops. Old Staff Sergeants and Gunnery Sergeants who were cook/rifleman in Korea as privates and kids went nuts to lay out a spread. Overseas you were not forgotten in the field either.

I remember well my mother doing Thanksgiving when I was a little boy. We weren't wealthy but we had a house out on Long Island. Mom would break out the crystal glasses from Ireland she inherited from her grandmother. My sister and I got Canada Dry ginger ale in those glasses along with Irish linen napkins and a meal you could die for. You ate until you were stuffed.

Later on my Mom would lay out some pies and and a cake she baked from scratch - for the pie crusts she always rolled them out with a glass quart soda or beer bottle. A rolling pin was never necessary to a girl out of 1918. My father adored her and she loved him although they had some brawls that had me rolling in bed with laughter as a youngster. Nobody ever got violent but I remember one beauty:

Pop: "Jesus, Barbara, I used to shoot Germans that treated me better than you!"

Mom: "Of course you did! They weren't bankrolling the horses!!"

I miss them both very much.

HAPPY THANKSTURKEY FROM Q/P.

Happy Thanksgiving, Larry, to you, the bride, John, the children, the grandchildren--and to the kitties--those lucky, fluffy, spoiled little souls. And to all those I care about here at the NY board. I hope all of you have a beautiful holiday with your family and friends.

We all . . . . each of us have so much to be thankful for, so many blessings.

Love to you all.

Grits, I am happy to be friends with a girl like you - the things you do for the people you love make me wonder.

Pop was long gone when my Mom went into dementia but my sister knew what to do. Martha got Mom into good care, squirreled the assets, and took care of her little brother with cash when Mom died. The nursing home would have raped our mother out of everything she had. Jeez, girls seem to do the best when people get old or things go wrong in a family.

I'm so sorry that my sister Martha died too soon - she would have been 65 on November 4th.

One Delta pop and the account went up after playing the losing ponies all day.

One word from the bride and I have to go to bed (I just got the word) - I can play my radio while in bed but I have to ditch the female finger puppets and give up the bottle of cheap gin.

Yea Larry those where indeed the good O Day's. I too spent a couple of Thanksgivings overseas thinking of that big meal. We use to eat in shifts there was so many family members at Grandma's house. Now I can only look back, thinking of the way things where. Wish everyone a peacefull day. Say a prayer for all our troops today.
