BLANDY wins the first race ever run at Belmont Park for August Belmont in 1905. And yes they ran clockwise until the early 1920s.

WHIRLAWAY is going to lose a big one during the war but I'm too lazy to look it up. Notice the Widener Chute coming across the track.

Belmont Park ca. 1960 with the old grandstand there.

An electric Long Island Rail Road Train in the 1920s. You can see the Belmont grandstand over the second car.

1918 - A U.S. Army Air Mail Airplane lands in the infield at Belmont Park. Mail from NY to Washington D.C. and back was carried this way by brave men during the war to end all wars.

The Widener Chute: in business for straight sprints up to 6 furlongs until the early 1950s.

The backside of the old grandstand until torn down in the 1960s (the new place copied it).

Belmont Backyard:

This a recent photo but it doesn't catch the pond or the "woods" but it's a place where a lot of fans land to catch some sun and grab some eats and picnics and family get-togethers.

I have a lot more Belmont photos that span the years and I'll post them when I can catch a mood and de-bogglefy my old mind.

One original 1905 brick entrance to Belmont Park can still be found at the back end of the backyard. Today there is only a road that runs perpendicular to it and a parking lot beyond but more than one hundred years ago wealthy people came through it in horse-drawn carriages up a tree-lined path off of Hempstead Avenue (Hempstead Turnpike now) for a day at the races.

Doesn't matter what decade, what century--its one beautiful piece of real estate. To me, it always will be. Thanks for sharing these QP. Damn, I'm aging though, big time. LOLOL
